An athlete who is training for his chosen event. Early in the training obvious progress is made and the athlete can measure increases in his strength and speed. But later a plateau is encountered and there are extended periods of time when it seems no progress occurs, accompanied by pain and setbacks. But the experienced athlete knows that these times of no outward progress are actually times of inward change and renewal. The body is resisting and then adapting to the new and heavier demands placed upon it. The mind is also at work gaining new confidence and resilience and getting used to the idea that it can do more as the body's potential expands.
Confusion and impatience may even set in and we may even doubt our capabilities. These are good signs, that desired changes are taking place. Great mathematicians have reported episodes of extreme confusion and dismay, even loss of confidence, just before making major breakthroughs.
